Department Reviews Rivian R1S Patrol Vehicle

We’re proud to have upfit the very first patrol-ready Rivian R1S, which is now in use by the Palo Alto Police Department.  As more agencies explore EV vehicles for law enforcement, this Rivian R1S patrol-spec build shows what’s possible when advanced platforms like the Rivian R1S are built for police patrol duty.  This Rivian R1S was equipped with a full emergency lighting package, including a roof-mounted light bar, which we integrated seamlessly into the vehicle’s design. We installed a complete police siren system, two-way police radio, and a LensLock patrol camera system with onboard MDVR and a wireless modem to support modern digital evidence capture and connectivity.  To support all of these power-hungry systems, we added our proprietary Auxiliary Power System (APS). The Rivian’s native 12V system isn’t designed to handle the continuous electrical load required to run patrol grade upfit equipment, so the Patrol EV APS ensures that all upfit electronics function reliably without compromising the vehicle’s primary power systems.  The build also features Patrol EV designed and installed ballistic protection, a Gamber Johnson push bumper, Gamber Johnson center console, and a locking gun rack.

 

The vehicle is already in active service, and the department has reported excellent performance on duty. According to the customer, the Rivian has drawn a great deal of positive attention from the community, and they plan to return to Patrol EV & Rivian soon for additional upgrades, including rear locking cargo storage drawers.

 

As a gesture of appreciation for the quality of work, the Palo Alto Police Department presented our team with two challenge coins recognizing outstanding service.

The patrolling officer also shared that the Rivian made a strong impression in the community, saying:

“We had it at our National Night Out event last night and everyone was excited about it. Our City Manager and Council members all saw it and were very impressed.”
